On the morning of 6 June 1944, American solders landed on Utah Beach in the Manche département. Earlier that night, parachuting and bombing operations had been carried out with a view to securing the sites as far as possible ahead of the landings. Five beaches were chosen for their strategic geographic location: Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno and Sword Beach.
